Buying a phone directly from a service provider binds you to a contract and the phone you buy from them will only work exclusively with the SIM which they provided with the mobile phone. This phone is termed as "locked" as it can only be operated with a SIM or subscriber information module that is serviced by the network you bought it from.

But there are websites that offer free DIY instructions so you could unlock your own phones using your own PC and a data cable compatible with your phone. Some websites offer Sony Ericsson unlocking and other brand-specific unlocking services.
Mobile phones can easily be unlocked. The more common and slightly older the mobile phone, the easier it is to find software to unlock it. To unlock Sony Ericsson phones might be easier than unlocking the new iPhone. Phones that are fresher from the market are the ones that are harder to unlock as they are yet to be outmoded from the companies that bought their subsidy codes.
